When you meet her, she has no confidence, but then through your efforts of empowering local people to help, you see her transform.  She blossoms into a confident woman ready to reclaim her life and take control of her circumstances…its just unspeakably fulfilling."

The Baby Boomers can volunteer too, y’know

- By Rachel Charman

When we talk about volunteering jobs, often what springs to mind is an image of sprightly, nubile young things leaping up mountains in Jack Wills polo shirts, saving rainforests on their gap years. Whilst a volunteering job can work wonders when you are in the first stages of your career, it can also have benefits for the older generation too.

Volunteering isn’t just about getting something cool on your CV to make your path into an ethical career run more smoothly. It has perks all of its own, outside the world of work, and nowhere is this more apparent than within the older generation of volunteers.

A recent report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation showed that older people are just as keen to volunteer than fresh-faced youngsters keen to slap a volunteering job on their university application. It is not generally the case that older volunteers are looking to boost their career with volunteering, but sometimes it can be useful for people retiring from their lifelong job and looking to gain experience in another area before taking on a different job in a completely new area.
